About the Safety House Program
Thank you for your interest in Safety House.
We are a non-profit, fully volunteer operated community organisation promoting safety for all Canberrans, both young and old.
The ACT Safety House Association has houses in around 43 suburbs of Canberra, each one identified by the smiling yellow house which is on a plaque on the front (or sometimes the side) of letterboxes. This sign indicates that the people inside have been properly authorised to operate as a Safety House, and that it is a safe place to go to if you are feeling unsafe, threatened or unsure.
There are many reasons why someone might want to use a safety house:
a child is being bullied;
a child is lost, injured or sick;
someone in the community is being approached or followed;
a senior is feeling sick or disorientated;
a child is feeling frightened of an animal
If anyone, but especially a child or elderly person, finds themselves in need of a Safety House, all they need to do is knock on the door to know they will get all the assistance they require.
Any member of the community can offer their house as a Safety House. A Safety Householder is not expected to solve the problem, only to assess the situation and contact the appropriate person/s who could be a parent, babysitter, friend, relative, Ambulance or Police.
Safety House can only work if members of the community participate in the program. You can do this by becoming a Safety House and maybe even joining a committee in your area.
